On February 27, Bruno Mars’ comeback, after an almost ten-year hiatus, Mars released a solo studio album titled “The Romantic.” The album spans nine songs and 32 minutes
This marks Bruno’s 4 Solo project and his 5 album, including his collaboration “An Evening With Silk Sonic,” which was his team-up with Anderson Paak, where they went on to win four Grammys for their work.
“Risk It All” the album intros and with a marriachi x pop fusion like nothing I’ve ever heard before, untill a couple weeks back with Bad Bunny at the Super Bowl, when he brought out Lady Gaga to perform “Die With A Smile” a song with her and bruno mars but this rendition of the song was with a tropical beat a sound that is very Puerto Rican this song was a great intro but I feel lacked song writing 7/10
“Cha Cha Cha” What I will say is that it is catchy, but the hook “cha cha cha with me and i’ma cha cha with you tonight” is very cringey to me 6/10
“I just might” is the third song off the album and also the single from the album. The same problems I have with “Cha Cha Cha” I have with this song: catchy check, cringey check. The song feels like something I would hear in a Macy’s commercial, 5/10.
“God Was Showing off” is to me where I feel the album starts to pick up. Bruno goes back to the Silk Sonic sound, 7/10.
“Why You Wanna Fight?” This is my highlight of the album. This was the one song on the album that, when I was listening through, I stopped and went back to replay the song before moving on, 8.5/10.
“On my Soul.” This song gets really repetitive really fast for me. I do love the instrumental. The guitar on this song is crazy, 5.5/10.
“Something Serious” What a weird track the cow bells on this song made me feel for a second like I was watching the intro of the George Lopez show, and this really is my breaking point where I get tired of Bruno’s lackluster writing on this album, 4/10.
“Nothing Left”, this song is like if “Die With Smile” and “Silk Sonic” had a baby, it would be this. I thought this song was good. I would consider this my second favorite song on the album, 8/10.
“Dance With Me,” The ninth and final track on the album, is a decent love song. I could definitely see this being played at a wedding, 7.7/10.
Overall, to me, this is my least favorite Bruno Mars project. The songwriting on these songs is really bad. With a short album run track of nine songs, there are only 3 songs I would say I thoroughly enjoyed out of the half an hour listen. Sad to say, but this was not worth the almost ten-year wait for a solo project. Maybe it’s because I’m not a big fan of the pop sound Bruno Mars has been doing recently, which is mostly the reason the album didn’t sit with me. For the fans that like the pop Bruno, will love this album, and I do think this will for sure win Album of the Year at the Grammys next year.
For “The Romantic” by Bruno Mars, I think it is a 5.5/10 album
Sophomore Makayla Aquino shared her thoughts on the album with me, “I think it’s a good album, but not as good as his other albums.”
Sophomore Dwayne Rej Padua took to his Instagram to share his reaction to the album “Our Kuya gave us peak once again.”
