Suk Yeol Yoon is a former president of South Korea who was elected in 2022. He declared martial law in 2024 under the reasoning of purging spies and traitors that are within the government. However, he withdrew the order himself as he thought his actions were too violent.
After this incident, the Korean Congress impeached and arrested him under the charge of disturbing national peace. After many trials, he was sentenced to death on January 12 for an insurrection charge after his failed attempt to put his country under martial law back in 2024.
People have different opinions on this breaking news. The death sentence is usually very rare in South Korea, so that alone is big news. And it is the former president who received the death penalty, so this quite literally shocked the entire country.

“This is absolutely unbelievable, this is just too sporadic and radical reaction from the judges and the congress when he didn’t commit any crime to even begin the trial with,” says Sonny Kang, an elderly Korean woman.
Kang believes that declaring martial law is a legal power given to the president and that it is unreasonable to charge him for insurrection and sentence him to death.
Rain Lazic, a college student with a great interest in politics, also agrees with this perspective.
“I mean, he ended the martial law himself after some time, so what even is the reason of giving him the death penalty for so-called insurrection?”
Lazic generally gave negative responses on this topic, saying that the charge doesn’t match Yoon’s actions. He questioned the validity of a charge on Yoon.
It seems like more people are confused, dissatisfied, and surprised at the news than those who are just simply accepting the results. It is truly shocking news to ever see a former president being sentenced to death.
