Social media plays a major role in the lives of students today. Some of the most popular platforms we are talking about are Instagram and YouTube. Both give users entertainment, trends, and ways to connect with others.
However, I believe YouTube is ultimately the better platform because it feels more open, offers both short- and long-form content, and serves as a more reliable source of information.

Some students still prefer Instagram because of its simplicity and fast-paced format. Chanelle Panga, an ERHS student, shared, “As someone who watches both, I think Instagram is way more entertaining since most teens are on there.”
That opinion reflects why Instagram remains popular among teenagers. The app allows users to scroll through content quickly and stay updated on trends without watching lengthy videos.
YouTube, however, combines quick entertainment with more detailed content. Its Shorts feature gives users the same type of fast videos found on Instagram Reels, while still offering longer videos for viewers who want deeper discussions or explanations.
This balance makes YouTube more versatile because users can choose between short clips and full-length videos in the same app.

Another advantage is YouTube’s value as an information source. ERHS student Perry Liu, supporting YouTube, explained, “YouTube is way healthier for me. I’m not saying either of them are healthy, but YouTube at least shows me helpful videos, Instagram only shows me brainrot.”
Longer videos give creators more time to explain topics clearly, provide evidence, and include context. Educational channels often break down complicated subjects in ways that are easier for students to understand. By comparison, information shared on Instagram is usually condensed into short clips or captions, which can leave out important details.
Although Instagram remains one of the most popular social media apps, YouTube offers a broader experience. Its mix of short- and long-form content, creative freedom, and stronger educational value make it the better choice for students and everyday users alike.
