On the night of October 30, Brent Faiyaz released a new single titled “have to,” and with his new single, Faiyaz released a music video.
At the beginning of the music video, it is a black screen with words that read “Brent Faiyaz had ICON recorded and scheduled to release on September 19, 2025, the night before, Brent sent us a group text pulling the plug on the album.” The text referring to his group text with his record label team ISO Suppermacy.
After the text disappears from the screen, a text bubble appears with what Brent Faiyaz said: “Yo, I’m not dropping ICON tomorrow.”
After the text bubble disappeared, we received additional information: “He also had another lead single and music video; he scrapped those too, then sent us this.”
What he sent to his group chat was the file for the single he released, “have to.”
But does this mean “ICON” is just what could have been now? Is “ICON” a thing of the past? Will “ICON” ever release?
I asked ERHS students if they think “ICON” will ever be released.
Sophomore Anthony Jimenez said, “I thought he was retired, so probably not.”
Jiminez is referring to the 2024 Instagram post of Faiyaz with the caption “enjoying retirement.”
Freshman Mateo Truijo had strong feelings about his thoughts.
“It wont drop, ever,” Truijo said.
The music video for “have to.” is a time-lapse of Brent Faiyaz on a private jet. Through the video, Brent Faiyaz is seen recording music, sleeping, and even texting, which seems to be a love interest he is talking to
In the song, he pitches up his voice, which is not an unusual thing for Brent Faiyaz to do, but it is weird for him to pitch his voice up for the whole track run. There is, though, a short stint in the song where he pitches his voice down to give him a deep voice.
In the song, Faiyaz talks about trying to get to this location as fast as he can to meet this special someone, “I’m in a race with time to get where I belong.” He even goes so far as to say, “I’ll pack and ship myself if I have to.”
