Imagine you are leaving campus, seeing the gate in sight, and suddenly, a bike comes right at you. You manage to avoid it in time, but what would’ve happened if you didn’t? This is a situation that has happened to me and other students almost every day.

At the beginning of the school year, most students would walk their bike while on campus, and then ride it when they got off campus. It was safe for both them and other students. This isn’t the case anymore during second semester.
With lack of supervision, many students will ride their bikes or scooters while on campus. It’s unsafe for every student who uses that exit because it could lead to serious harm. Belen Camarena, a sophomore at ERHS, is one of the many students who uses this exit.
“I see students riding their bicycles and scooters everyday around this area,” Camarena says. “It’s scary because I feel like they don’t pay attention to their surroundings.”
Not only do students who use this exit express concern, but also students who ride bikes and scooters to school. Maya Brophy, a junior at ERHS, is one of those students.
“I don’t like riding my scooter on campus because there’s just so many people in that one area,” Brophy says. “It’s stressful for every student there.”
Safety is the number one priority at ERHS, so there should be supervision around the area. I have seen security guards around the area at the beginning of semester two, but now there are none. I believe there should be at least one or two security guards there, and make the rule of not riding your bike or scooter on campus more stricter.
I understand that it is a struggle to catch every student who breaks the rule, however, if students start to see and experience first hand the consequences that come with breaking the rules, then it will slowly start to become less of a problem.
