Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reeves has been on fire since the start of the season.
Austin Reeves has had quite a story to get to this point. He was not a sought-after recruit coming out of Oklahoma. During the 2021 NBA draft, he went undrafted. Eventually, Austin ended up with the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent on a two-way deal, which quickly changed into a normal deal worth about 2.5 million dollars.
Since then, in his past seasons,
7.3 points per game in the 2021-22 season.
13.0 points in the 2022-23 season.
15.9 points in the 2023-24 season.
20.2 points in the 2024-25 season.
Through five games, Austin Reaves has been averaging an astonishing 34 points per game, and he has also averaged 6.8 rebounds and 8.5 assists.
It has been a “Reavsanity” for Austin, referring to “Linsanity” where Jeremy Lin of the New York Knicks’ eleven-game phenomenon in February of 2012. In Jermey Lin’s run, he averaged 24 points, 9 assists, and 4.1 rebounds.
Kenny Smith, former NBA player and Hall of Famer, has agreed with this take, saying on “Inside The NBA” when talking about Reaves as a game-winner, “No, I am the new Jeremy Lin, I am baby Luka.”
His other broadcast mates say that the comp is not comparable because Reaves has had a solid career for himself so far.
Jermey Lin, before Linsanity, was a nobody, and after Jermey Lin returned to normal, Jermey Lin averaged 13 points till getting injured, resulting in him being out for that 2011-12 season and averaging 11 points per game for till 2019, when he played his last season in the NBA with the Toronto Raptors, going out as a Champion.
I interviewed ERHS Senior Aiden Lupia about his thoughts on the phenomenal run Austin Reaves is on. “Austin Reaves WILL be the second option when Lebron comes back, I promise, mark my words, he is great,” Lupia shares.
