At Eleanor Roosevelt High School, student’s have the opportunity to have late start or early dismissal by having no fifth or sixth period, or first. Depends on what the student wishes to choose, but most commonly kids choose to have early dismissal. This means that instead of going to a class for sixth period, kids are allowed to leave the school and end the school day.
However, recently school administrators have brought to attention that many students do not leave the school when classes are done. They wish to remind students that when their day is done, that means they should leave the campus.
“For safety and supervision reasons, students should not remain on campus or gather in common areas once they are no longer scheduled to be in class” quoted from ERHS Friday Flash, https://app.smore.com/n/2cxk6

The letter goes on to state that there are exceptions, like students who choose to have early dismissal by having no 5th period. Those students on Wednesday are allowed to stay on campus, because they have a following sixth period.
Early dismissal is a great opportunity for students for many reasons. They can head home, or go to work, they can also make appointments or if they have any far away after-school activities they need to get too. Many students choose to have it, but they can only have it once they have completed their high school graduation requirements.
Many kids who partake in sports find it a great benefit as well. If the sport takes place during fifth period, they can have early dismissal for sixth period. So if athletes have to leave class early for a game on Fridays or Thursdays, students with early dismissal don’t miss out on class. The same goes for kids who have early dismissal for fifth period, and a sport sixth.
Early dismissal also clears out parking lot traffic, as many kids who have early dismissal more then likely drive. There are less cars and for kids with a sixth period or fifth, it makes it easier to leave the school. But don’t forget to drive safely.
“After school ends on even days, I don’t have to sit in traffic for twenty minutes,” Jaelyn Questel says, a driver at ERHS, “There’s still traffic, but its much easier.”
The same goes for late start. Students who don’t have a first period would have a late start, and come to school for their third period. This can help clear out early morning school traffic as well and regulate it nicely. This means the lines are not as long, and there are more parking spaces in the student parking lot.

Students who have early dismissal are encouraged to leave through the back gate located by the E building. There, security guards will scan them out by their student ID to make sure they are allowed to leave. If students do not leave, security guards will politely ask them to head home or exit the campus.
