The ERHS Chess Club is preparing to host an upcoming schoolwide tournament aimed at bringing together students for a day of competitive play and strategic thinking.
The tournament, scheduled to take place on campus later this month, will be open to all ERHS students, regardless of experience level. Club officers said the event will feature multiple rounds, with players matched by skill level to encourage fair and engaging competition.

Chess Club president Adrian Brueno said the tournament is intended to highlight both competition and learning, explaining that “I’ve seen a lot of improvements with the new players, so it’s going to be quite interesting to see who’s going to win”. The event has been in planning for several weeks, with officers organizing brackets, time controls, and equipment to ensure the tournament runs smoothly.
The ERHS Chess Club meets weekly on Tuesday after school and has continued to grow throughout the year. Meetings typically include casual games, timed matches, and discussions of strategy, allowing members to prepare for competitive play. Club leaders said the tournament will give members a chance to apply what they have learned in a structured setting.

In addition to testing skill, the tournament is expected to attract new interest in the club. Jonathan Lin, a student member of the Chess Club, said, “I think I would have a pretty good chance of winning. I think the tournament itself would be scuffed like last time, but I feel like the overall atmosphere of the tournament would be good!” describing the previous tournament and the appeal of participating in a school chess event.
Many supporters of the club say chess encourages critical thinking, patience, and focus, skills that benefit students academically as well as socially. Organizers also hope the tournament will help identify students interested in representing the Chess club at future competitions.
