November is considered the month of giving thanks and appreciating the world around you. Eleanor Roosevelt High School’s campus is no different. Many student-led events and fundraisers have happened in November with the purpose of giving back and spreading kindness.
The Warm Hats and Coats drive has been advertised all over campus for the past few weeks. It is a fundraiser where students can donate lightly-worn hats or coats in exchange for community service hours. You can find various red bins around campus and by classrooms where donations can be dropped off. It ends on November 21, and all donations will be given to multiple organizations.
Youth For Democracy, a club at ERHS, hosted an event on Thursday and Friday during Office Hours that centered around giving thanks to staff members. Students wrote anonymous thank-you notes to different categories of staff. Each note will be given to a different staff member to show students appreciation for the work that goes into keeping ERHS functioning.

Co-President of Youth For Democracy, Valeria Madrigal, said, “We want to show our appreciation for the staff that keeps our school running. So thank you to our staff!
Other clubs are sharing their thankful spirit through potlucks. The Spanish Honors Society hosted a pie-tasting event during office hours. Students who participated tried several different pie flavors and then ranked them collectively. Meanwhile, in the ERHS Counseling Center, Women’s Empowerment is making various slimes in their first meeting of the school year. The slimes are supposed to help alleviate stress going into finals season this school year.
Staff are also showing thanks to one another by hosting their annual Staff Thanksgiving. Employees bring a food of their choice to share amongst themselves in the cafeteria. Honors Ethnic Studies teacher Amanda Sandoval commented on the staff event, “It unites the staff together and allows them to appreciate each other.”
As ERHS starts its Thanksgiving break, they have given thanks to one another and others in profound ways this year.
