A trending tweet questions Hannah Baker’s intentions from the hit Netflix series “13 Reasons Why,” in leaving the tapes behind for the 13 people who were the reasons she killed herself.

The tweet states that Hannah “killed herself to prove a point” and “only did it to get revenge” which tears Hannah Baker’s character apart. What the tweet fails to recognize is the mental state in which a person has to be in in order to commit suicide. Hannah was depressed. From moving to a new school, to having rumors spread about her very early on into the school year, she was unable to cope with her reputation. The tweet says Hannah had a “princess complex” when she only wanted what most high school girls want, to be liked by others.

Hannah didn’t care if she lived or died. How do we expect her to think about what other people would do after she died if she can’t even care about herself? She wanted to make the people who turned against her or had a large effect on her life see what she was going through behind the scenes.

In tape 10, the first mention of Jessica’s party, Hannah watches Bryce rape a passed out Jessica while she is hiding in the closet. The tweet scrutinizes Hannah for not stopping Bryce when in reality she was in shock. Hannah experienced the flight fight or freeze response and unfortunately froze. The person who wrote the tweet has no business commenting on Hannah’s response if they have never been in that situation themselves.

Although the tweeter mentions their past suicidal feelings and how they surpassed them, Hannah Baker had been raped. The mental issues of rape victims gofar deeper than those of a suicidal individual. By the end of the show, Hannah Baker could no longer be helped by her family or potential friends. She needed professional help to help her get past what she had seen and went through and was deprived of that in tape 13.

When we watch what Hannah went through, whether we sympathize or not, we will never be able to fully understand how she is feeling.

She didn’t put Clay in the tapes to torture him. He was a bystander. He didn’t do anything wrong. But then again he didn’t do anything right. But if he hadn’t been in the tapes he would’ve never had been there to guide the others to see the wrong they had done after her death.
