On Wednesday, November 2nd, the Chicago Cubs beat the Cleveland Indians by a score of 8-7 in Game 7 of the World Series. The Game 7 victory ended a 108-year championship drought for the Cubs.

Sports fans from around the world tuned into Fox to watch history unfold. Dexter Fowler, Chicago’s leadoff batter, hit a homerun off of ace Corey Kluber to start the game. Mixed emotions were displayed as the camera scanned across the stadium; Cubs fans jumped up and down in excitement where as Indians fans were shock-stricken. The Cubs scored several more times, one of those scores being courtesy of Javier Baez’s solo homerun; after the top of the fifth inning, the Cubs held a 5-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Jason Kipnis and Carlos Santana scored for the Indians, trimming the Cubs’ lead down to two.  However, the ageless David Ross homered in the top of the sixth inning to make the score 6-3.

Things looked bleak for the Indians as they entered the bottom of the eighth inning trailing by a score of 6-3. Manager Joe Maddon of the Cubs decided to remove starter-turned-reliever Jon Lester from the game and replace him with closer Alrodis Chapman. With two outs, Chapman allowed an RBI double and a two-run homerun to tie the game. The once defeated Indians fans erupted in the stadium.

The game went to extra innings and in the top of the tenth, an RBI double by Zobrist and RBI single by Montero gave the Cubs a two-run lead. The Indians responded with one run in the bottom of the tenth, but Michael Martinez grounded out to third base. Cubs’ third baseman, Kris Bryant, wore the biggest smile ever seen on a baseball field when he grounded the ball and tossed it to first base.

Cubs fans in Chicago and around the country celebrated as they finally had the long-awaited championship.
