Helicopter crashes into New York river

On the evening of March 12, five passengers were killed in a helicopter crash in a New York river.

Authorities have confirmed that Trevor Cadigan and his friend Brian McDaniel along with three other people were killed after the helicopter – a Eurocopter AS350 private charter – went down into the New York East River after what might been speculated (but not confirmed) to be engine failure. However, it turns out that a passenger’s bag may be the cause, having inadvertently hit the emergency fuel shutoff button, resulting in the crash.

34-year-old Daniel Thompson and 29-year-old Tristan Hill, both from New York, and 29-year-old Carla Vallejos Blanco were the three other people that died.

The pilot, however, survived and remains hospitalized.

Footage of the crash was recorded by bystanders from nearby buildings that depicted the tragic crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board examined the wreckage of the helicopter to determine the cause of the accident.

They looked at three things to determine the crash: the pilot’s training, experience and immediate response during the actual crash itself.

“It took awhile for the divers to get these people out. They worked very quickly, as fast as they could,” Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said in an interview with USA Today. “It was a great tragedy that we had here.”
