Black Panther: Hero or Hype?

As I stood outside of the theatre in the brisk cold winter air, I was among hundred of other movie goers as we awaited the debut of arguably the most anticipated film of the year: Black Panther. You could feel the excitement in the air as individuals were hurriedly rushed into the 8:00 showing. Some argue that it’s movies like this that make the movie going experience memorable. As I settled down the watch the previews, the crowd grew antsy for the feature film to present itself. Having heard movie reviews and critics praising the movie, it’s actors, energy, and wit, I was more than excited to evaluate these things for myself. While some praise the movie in its tendency to feature a predominantly black cast, amidst the racial controversy once depicted in the film industry, Black Panther demonstrated this in a sophisticated manner, while also providing entertainment for its audiences. The general concept of the movie inspired by the Marvel franchise, welcomes a new “superhero” edition film. The most debatable question recently surfacing however, is whether or not lead actor Chadwick Boseman was a real hero, or if the movie itself was all hype?? “Personally I really enjoyed the film and I believe it really accurately portrayed the concepts that it desired to deliver, but also was a portrayal of black excellence.” Student Jalen Chevalier states. On the contrast, you have opinions where the film was definitely exceptional but was not 100% expected by audiences. “I thought the movie was really good and I feel like it was a really enjoyable thing, but at the same time I feel like I expected more from the film and believe it was slightly over hyped” movie goer Jessica Alvarez claims. While difficult to accurately decide which opinion to take into account, it’s not arguable when saying the movie was definitely a blockbuster hit, and may anticipate more to come !
