The streets can be unpredictable when it comes to driving and our school parking lot is no exception; because it is packed to the brim with new student drivers, it is important to never get too comfortable when behind the wheel, for you never know what can happen.

So here are some tips to insure safety:

1. Stay away from your cell phone

Studies have shown that using a phone when driving can be comparable to driving under the influence.

2. Don’t Speed

Driving over the speed limit can not only increase your risk for a more hazardous collision but also can scare other drivers around you.

3. Be Aware of your Surroundings

It’s important to be consistently checking your mirrors to know what cars surround you at all times. When backing up in parking lots, make sure to know how much room you have to back out and the traffic of the area.

4. Buckle Up

As much as we try to avoid accidents, unfortunately they still do occur. Wearing your seat belt can save your life and even prevent you from being seriously harmed in an unfortunate situation.

5. Pay Attention to Road Conditions

From weather conditions to heavy traffic, looking up the conditions you will be driving in will make you mentally prepared for the drive.

6. Never Drive Under the Influence

If you are in a position that you are not fit to drive, find another ride. Driving under unfit conditions can kill you or those around you.

In an interview with ERHS student driver Harmony Johnson I asked what was a bad experience she had on the road,

“Drivers can be too cautious causing them to question their decisions. Once a driver was being overly too cautious and it almost caused an accident.”

I asked her what’s some advise you can give to new drivers,

“Don’t be scared don’t wait too long when making decisions.”
