On September 14th, Roosevelt’s girls’ golf team fell to Upland by a score of 261-259 at Goose Creek Golf Course. (In high school golf, six participants from each team play nine holes. The five best scores are added up, and at the end of the match, the team with the lowest score wins).

There were positives to take from the match, despite the loss. The girls showed solid accuracy off the tee box with the driver (one of the hardest clubs to hit). Straight tee shots put the girls in positions to succeed when going into the greens.

One area the team is looking to improve on is the short game. As a whole, they struggled when chipping onto the green and putting. There is a common saying that golfers “Drive for show and putt for dough,” and that proved to be true against Upland. The scores didn’t reflect the booming drives, but rather the putts that lipped out (spun around the cup and didn’t go in).

Assistant coach Eric VanderWeerd made it clear that the girls are working hard to refine their craft. The team is practicing on a daily basis for several hours, and a large majority of that time is spent chipping and putting. Although the result against Upland didn’t show it, significant progress is being made as a team.

Roosevelt is now 4-3 and 1-1 in league. With league-play in full swing, look for the competition to heat up!
