Trump and Puerto Rico..

President Donald Trump’s speeches are usually comedy gold (that should terrify you) but at some point we’ve got to ask ourselves, “Is Trump even aware of the things he’s saying?” In the past few weeks he made a trip to Puerto Rico after it was devastated by Hurricane Maria. Now maybe Trump’s just suffering from a bit of media fatigue and he’s overall done with these hurricanes and natural disasters. I guess in some ways that would explain his apathy to such a situation. I mean, he’s our president- he shouldn’t be, that would be an awful excuse but I mean, he’s human too!

Trump described the days he spent in Puerto Rico as “a fun time”, which is interesting, right? But either way, some of the speeches he made were uh… well they left an impression. I’m not exactly sure what order he said these things in, since there were a few different incidents that went on. I was first aware of when he told Puerto Rico that they were throwing “our budget a little out of whack.” Okay so it was a hurricane right? A hurricane! Yeah I don’t think it was Puerto Rico’s fault but moving on. Sometime during the same speech he also said they should feel lucky they haven’t suffered from a real tragedy like in Katrina, because only “16 or 17” people died during Hurricane Maria, which has moved up to 45 now. I think that’s pretty insensitive that he would tell a place that has just been completely demolished that their “problems” don’t exactly seem as big as they are, which makes me think maybe he doesn’t know himself how catastrophic the effects of the hurricane left the island but it is his job as our president to be aware of these things right?

The most controversial thing about his trip was his when he went to a church to help pass out much needed supplies, however things got weird when he began throwing these “beautiful, soft paper towels” into the crowd as if that would help soak up all the water, which then again strengthens my idea that maybe he didn’t know what was even happening over there. Along with the other supplies being passed out there were solar powered flashlights that he believed did not need to be given for some reason. Yeah that’s it- I’m convinced he has no clue. He must not be aware of their power situation.

While I don’t think anything major has come of it, he had some issue with San Jaun’s mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz and as far as I know it was just mindless talking on Trump’s part (what’s new?). He said she “wants everything done for [Puerto Rico],” and I assume he meant that in some type of offensive way.

A lot of people have defended him, as well as himself, by saying it was simply jokes and some weird type of humor, which I guess that’s fair enough. Everyone has a completely different sense of what’s funny and not and sometimes it’s really dark and no one gets it but I mean, this is our president that said this in such poor context.

No matter what happened this is, of course, is a tragedy; it’s been three weeks after the island was hit by the disastrous hurricane and still 93% is without power. Officials believe electricity might not be up and running until next year. They’ve become a completely isolated island that’s falling into a major food shortage, and it may take years before they’re fully back on their feet.
