American Terrorism: Africa

In the United States of America, terrorism, as defined by Title 22 Chapter 38 U.S. Code § 2656f, is “premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets”. There is a plethora of evidence that, according to their own definition, the American state is the most effective and most destructive international terrorist organization on the planet. The US government has directly carried out or been complicit in committing crimes against humanity in areas all across the globe. In particular, many countries across the African continent have been put into ruin due to acts of imperialism and terrorism from America.

Most imperialist actions done by the US in Africa involved using the CIA to overthrow governments that were considered to lean too far to the left and against the interests of American businesses. For example, a CIA-backed military coup in Ghana overthrew Kwame Nkrumah’s government in 1966. Nkrumah, a Marxist, wanted to rid his country of the Western imperialism that had ravaged it for almost 500 years. He did this by nationalizing the Ghanaian economy and throwing out foreign businesses. Threatened by the possibility of not being able to pillage Ghana’s natural resources, the CIA organized parts of the Ghanaian military in overthrowing the government. The resulting military rule over the country plunged Ghana into several decades of extreme poverty and corruption that continues to this day. Unsurprisingly, the CIA-backed militants invited the International Monetary Fund and World Bank to manage Ghana’s economy, making the climate easier for Western multinational corporations to exploit Ghana for profit.

The near exact same series of events (the CIA overthrowing left-wing governments) happened in many other African countries, including the DRC, Angola, and Chad. The sub-fascist governments that America supported committed many atrocities, such as torture, mass killings, and forced poverty and starvation. All this was done just to increase the profits of the capitalists that bankroll those in power in the American government.
