September 26 was finally the day “UY SCUTI” was released. It is Young Thug’s first album back after being in jail for more than 900 days for violating Georgia’s RICO Act. The album spans 20 tracks with an hour and 15-minute run time, with features from Travis Scott, Cardi B, Future, Lil Baby, and many more.
The album starts with the track “Ninja”; the first voice we hear is a prosecutor in one of his court appearances, voicing his opinion on why they should keep Young Thug in jail. The sample of the persecutor is him stating, “He’s the one that’s king slime, he’s pulling the shots, he is the most dangerous of the 28 Judge and I implore you not to grant him a bond, he is dangerous.” The “28” referring to the the YSL record label.
This really set the tone for the album. I interpreted it as a checkmate from Young Thug, putting it right at the beginning of the album, showing he’s back, even with the persecutor trying to keep him in jail.
Young Thug apologized to many of his old friends on the album. On the track “Miss My Dogs” he apologizes to Drake saying, “Drizzy, you my brother, you know I ain’t goin’ against you.” He also apologizes to Mariah the scientist, his former girlfriend, with the lyrics, “Baby, I’m sorry, one of my biggest fears is losin’ you to the internet.”
Overall, though, I thought the album was not the greatest. I felt underwhelmed with all the delays. I expected a great album. There are still some great tracks, my favorite being the single from the album “Money on Money,” and “Pardon my back.”
I interviewed Ryan Wang, a sophomore at ERHS about his thoughts on the album.
“It was great except a couple of songs,” Wang said. “My favorite song was ‘Whoopty Doo.’ He gave the album a 7/10.
I was also able to interview CSUF alum Gustavo Campos about his thoughts on the album.
“The album shows when someone at the top doesn’t know how to recover from falling,” Campos said. “There was no creative direction of this album, and he expected it to blow up since he beat his case.”
