In a thrilling CIF Southern section open division playoff game on February 21, 2025, the Roosevelt Mustangs edged out the Sierra Canyon Trailblazers with the final score of 65-64.
The game, held at Roosevelt’s home court in Eastvale California, was witnessed by a crowd of over 1,000 enthusiastic fans. The Trailblazers started strong leading 26-16 at the end of the first quarter. By halftime, they maintained their advantage with a score of 32-24. However, the Mustangs mounted a significant comeback in the third quarter putting the game at 48-48 as they entered the final period.
Senior guard Brayden Burries was instrumental in Roosevelt’s victory recording a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. His performance was complemented by Myles Walker who added 17 points six assists and three steals. The game’s climax came at the final moments. Trailing by one point with 12 seconds remaining Burries was fouled and calmly sank two crucial free throws to give Roosevelt a 65-64 lead. Sierra canyons Bryce James attempted a three-pointer at the buzzer but missed, stealing the Mustang’s narrow victory.
Sierra Canyons offense was led by Junior Maximo Adams who scored 19 points and Bryce Cofeild, who contributed 18 points. Despite their efforts, the Trailblazers couldn’t overcome Roosevelt’s resilient defense in the closing seconds. This win marked Roosevelt’s 23rd consecutive home victory, improving their season record to 30-2.
The Mustang’s next challenge is against Saint John Bosco in the semifinals, a team they previously defeated in a close overtime game earlier in the season. This game was THE game to watch it was hyped and exciting considering Lebron James’ son was there the crowd would also go crazy when Roosevelt would score a point.
The next game at Roosevelt has already sold out after the past game selling this game out within a couple of hours.
A freshman at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, Cydd Adriano said, “This game was so fun, and whoever didn’t go missed out.”
Another freshman at ERHS, Jacob Alejandre said, “This game was so fun and I even made it in a picture that Brayden Burries was in.”
