Betsy DeVos, Historic Tie Breaker

In the confirmation hearing this Tuesday, the decision on whether or not Betsy DeVos will be confirmed as the new Secretary of Education for President Trump’s cabinet was the first ever in history that the Senate had a tie. The 50-50 tie was caused by two Republicans voting against the confirmation. It was the first time in which the Vice President was summoned to break the tie as cabinet members are the acting President’s entitlement and therefore such a rift in the decision was unprecedented. Vice President Pence voted for Betsy DeVos, confirming her position as the Secretary of Education.

The nomination of DeVos has sparked controversy and criticism on whether or not she was qualified for the role as her responses in the confirmation hearing in January were lacking and seemed as if she wasn’t knowledgeable about the position she was aspiring toward.
