Fort Lauderdale Airport Shooting

January 7, 2017. It is a normal day at Fort Lauderdale Airport in one of the several baggage claim areas. However, it will not be peaceful in a matter of moments.

A man wearing a blue sweater with black stripes on the shoulders walks into the area, and with the casualness one would have when checking a phone for messages, pulls out a gun, firing three times. People panic and throw themselves to the ground, looking for cover. The shooter, Esteban Santiago, kills five people and wounds several others.

Footage of the shooting was on TMZ, and an investigation followed afterwards. According to federal prosecutors, Santiago, a security guard, confessed that he planned the assault in the airport. Two victims are in intensive care as of Sunday, and four have either been released or transferred to other hospitals.

Currently, two of the three charges Santiago faces carries the possibility of the death penalty, according to a federal magistrate. The charges Santiago faces are using and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a crime, performing an act of violence that caused serious bodily injury in an area that serves international civil aviation, and causing the death of a person through the use of a firearm.

There are several possibilities on how Santiago managed to get the gun past security measures. Two months ago, Santiago voluntarily went to the Anchorage FBI office and said his mind was being controlled by US intelligence. He was “having terroristic thoughts and believed he was influenced by ISIS,” Anchorage police said. Authorities took away his gun and ordered a mental health evaluation. Since he was not deemed mentally defective, his gun was returned. It is believed to be the same gun used in the shooting.
