Saints v Rams: Did the no call cost the Saints the Super bowl?

Megan LeBlanc, Writer

For the NFC championships, the two competitors were the Los Angeles Rams and the New Orleans Saints. This game was very controversial as a call was not made regarding a pass interference with rams center back Nickell Robey-Coleman and Saints WR Tommylee Lewis. The score at 5:45pm was Rams 20 and Saints 20. Both were tied with every  possibility of winning. About 15 minutes later, the pass interference was committed by a Rams center back and the refs did not call the foul.

The Saints head coach Sean Payton was visibly furious as were the Saints fans crowding inside the Superdome. Throughout the entire game, the noise decibel from the fans was reaching around 110, which can lead to hearing damage if exposed for too long. During this time of the no call, the Saints noise and boos exceeded that decibel even more because of how furious and disappointed they were for their beloved Saints. It is believed that this call may have cost the Saints the Super bowl as after the no call, the Saints were at 4th down with no more opportunity  to make a touchdown which would have exceeded their lead by 6 points.

The game ended after going into overtime and the Rams making the final touchdown, which disappointed New Orleans fans all across the world. The NFL then decided to fine Rams center back Nickell Robey-Coleman because of the pass interference he committed during the game which infuriated even more people, as even the NFL recognized that there was no call made. This incident is still controversial today, as the 2019 Super Bowl made headway this weekend with the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams playing for the title.

The score favored the Patriots 13-3, going down as one of the lowest scoring games in history, and in some opinions being the most boring super bowl of all time. People around the world are even saying that the game might have been more interesting if it was the Patriots vs the Saints, and then continued to blame it on the refs of the disastrous game. All in all, The no call in the NFC championships is still being brought up in football conversations all around and will most likely go down in history as one of the worst no calls in the NFL career.

What quarterback of the Saints Drew Brees has to say about the no call: “Do I really want to be in a position talking about this over and over again? No, but I have to stand up and do it because I have to represent my team, represent the Who Dat Nation, and that’s my responsibility,” Brees said this on the Dan Patrick Show.
