Is Magnificent Seven Truly Magnificent?

Is Magnificent Seven Truly Magnificent?

Director Antoine Fuqua’s update of the 1960 era classic The Magnificent Seven puts a fresh  new spin on a familiar story. At least, that’s what the trailer would want you to believe. Despite the fact that Magnificent Seven has a truly magnificent cast with such big stars as Chris Pratt and Denzel Washington, I found the movie to be incredibly boring and hard to sit through.

It’s a classic western shoot-up about a town threatened by a greedy businessman and seven unlikely heroes coming to the town’s defense. When I use the word “classic,” I don’t mean timeless. I mean something we’ve seen a million times, in a million other movies, in a dozen other genres.

This movie fails to do anything new with the western genre and uses every trope and cliché in the book, and with the exceptions of a few cool action scenes and some truly great moments of Denzel being Denzel, I found myself on my phone through most of the movie. At its best, it’s unoriginal, and at worst, it’s boring, making the mundane Seven not worth the price of admission.
