For months Halsey fans have been anxiously awaiting new music and finally, she released information about a new single that was scheduled to drop on October 4th. She released a teaser trailer on youtube for her song just a week ago, sending dedicated fans into a frenzy.

Halsey’s newest single dives deep into what fans believe to be her break-up and then reunion with a well-known rapper, G-Eazy. Her lyrics paint this picture of devoting all her heart to helping the subject gain success and dealing with the aftermath of being cast into the shadows.

A lyrical breakdown;

“Found you when your heart was broke
I filled your cup until it overflowed” ~ Finding someone who needs help and motivation with their lives, helping them until they gained too much confidence and it ruined their relationship.

“I got you off your knees
Put you right back on your feet
Just so you could take advantage of me” ~ Being betrayed by someone you trusted; they might’ve found something more advantageous to their career, leaving Halsey behind.

“Tell me how’s it feel sittin’ up there
Feeling so high, but too far away to hold me
You know I’m the one who put you up there
Name in the sky” ~ Halsey reflects or even possibly reacts, to the sudden success of her lover and the way he spurns her for fame.

“Gave love ’bout a hundred tries
Just running from the demons in your mind
Then I took yours and made ’em mine”~ When lots of people fall in love they adopt their partners’ devices as there own, Halsey admits to being guilty of this.

One of the best ways to determine a song’s meaning is to break down the most important lyrics and identify possible themes. Breaking down only a few lines from the song shows listeners that Halsey has unresolved feelings about her old partner choosing fame over her love and support.

Opening Lyrics

The pop singer has won seven awards for her music/collaborations over the course of four years, making her mark on the music industry. She released her first song on SoundCloud called “Ghost” and began her career shortly thereafter with her EP “Room 93.” A fan of three years, Kody Thiel, thinks “this is a new chapter for her and it’s amazing.” Thiel has also described her new song as a “really upbeat and catchy song but deep down there is a lot of deeper meaning…”
