Plastic Straw Ban: Going Green or Gone Wrong?

Aurielle Whitehead, Writer

Plastic straws are a big part of our earth’s pollution. Recently, California became the first state to get rid of plastic straws from restaurant tables.

According to the Business Insider, “Starting in 2019, customers in that state will have to ask if they want a straw.” California is not the only state that is putting this “Straw Ban” into effect.

Also according to Business Insider, “In July, Seattle became the first major US city to ban single-use plastic straws and utensils.” Starbucks, a major American Coffee Company, has promised to remove all their straws from their stores by 2020. Some Starbucks locations have even started to remove straws and give out straw less-lids as an alternative.

Even though banning plastic straws will not solve the whole pollution problem, it could be a way start. Jordyn Miller, a junior, said, “I believe the Straw Ban is a huge start to getting our pollution problem under control, so I am pro-Straw Ban.”

USA Today states, “Plastic straws make up only about 2,000 tons of the nearly 9 million tons of the ocean’s plastic waste.” Hence, by removing plastic straws in  fast food chains & restaurants, this ban could enlighten millions of people concerning our earth’s plastic pollution issue.  While it’s a known fact that most people tend to disregard environmental issues, fully implementing the  Plastic Straw Ban could provide more public awareness regarding it.
