In a controversial vote, the Supreme Court has overturned the federal ban on sports gambling with a 6-3 vote in favor of overturning the 1992 law. Some states may keep a statewide ban therefore invalidating any decision by the NFL, but most will likely allow it with taxation.

A study by Nielsen commissioned by The Gaming Association has found that there’s a potential revenue boost of about $2.3 billion if the NFL decides to allow betting on their games.

Aside from the obvious benefit in cash, this could be detrimental to company image as it’s an official recognition and harboring of gambling. Many viewers are of religions that abhor gambling, and others who do not watch the sports at all may have an affected view of the NFL as well.

However, if they pass this guideline, many other fans will be much more inclined to watch the games. All sorts of people love to gamble, and this could, in fact, draw more viewers and thus, cash flow.

It remains to be seen what the decision will be, but knowing the sports industry this gambler’s dream may very well come true. The consequences of this action could be disastrous, or glamorous. Whichever way, the NFL will cause more controversy and with it some vitriol, but in the long term it’s likely that the revenue will even out, and with it the viewers, especially considering the study of the potential boost’s results.
