Whats New in Media: August

August has been an amazing month for movies so far, riding July’s momentum of movies like “Eighth Grade” and “Ant Man and The Wasp.”

Several good ‘flicks have been released this month, from all genres.

The well-anticipated “Christopher Robin” was put out, and while critics have rated around 6/10, viewers have given ratings closer to 8/10. The movie’s reception is very much based on nostalgia, as Luke Parker of “We Got This Covered” has pointed out, justifying the viewer ratings.

On a different note, “The Meg” was also released. By all indications, it is a run-of-the-mill shark movie, and reviews by critics and viewers alike reflect this. With a 46 by critics and a 56 by viewers on Metacritic, it’s obvious to see that this was not well-liked. However, if you’re looking for a good popcorn ‘flick, you may just want to see The Meg.

“The Black Klansman”, stylized as The BlacKKKlansman in advertising, is a movie based on the true story of Ron Stallworth, the first african-american to work in the Colorado Springs PD, and his exploits in investigating the KKK. The movie has been rated highly by both viewers and critics, and with a good setup like the movie has, there’s no doubt that the movie is a good one.

Lastly, there’s the black sheep of this month’s movies; “Slender Man.”

The plot is founded on a “creepypasta,” a fictional story made to be scary in a more psychological manner. This story is focused on a monster that steals children, which while being inherently scary would be amplified by the monster’s quality of being seen very little. The movie makes a mistake by disregarding this fact and showing off the terrible CGI monster, and the opinions of people very much illustrate this point. Viewers and critics absolutely hated this movie, with a 22 and a 29 on Metacritic respectively. If you are a self-respecting fan of horror, this is not at all recommended.

In short, though there have been downs on the hill of August, it is an overall good month for movies.

August has also been a spectacular month for new music! We have had new music releases from Travis Scott, Drake, Ariana Grande, YG and many more.  Many of these songs have already made the top charts! Some featured songs on the Hot 100 Billboard Charts are “In My Feelings” by Drake, “God is a Woman” by Ariana Grande and “Sicko Mode” by Travis Scott. In order to understand how our Mustangs felt about the new music releases, we went around campus and asked them about their opinions on the new music. Derell Balajadia, a junior, said, “My favorite song would have to be Houdini by Travis Scott and Playboi Carti because it included two of my favorite artists and it was an unreleased song From Travis Scott’s Album, Astroworld.” Travis Hoang, a sophomore, also stated, “My favorite album is Astroworld because it has a ton of moods packed into it and it’s catchy.” Our last interviewee was Skylar Swalm, who is a junior. She said, “My favorite album has been Kids See Ghosts by Kanye West and Kid Cudi because they work very well together!”
