Girl Up! Presents: The Great Awokening

Girl Up! Presents: The Great Awokening

Bethanie Mora, Club Writer

On March 23, Girl up! presents their first annual informational seminar, The Great Awokening, located in Eleanor Roosevelt’s auditorium, where many other events have been held in the past. If you didn’t know already, Girl Up! is our school’s feminist club, and meetings are held every Friday after school, starting at 3 pm.

Club President Miranda Claire was asked in a private interview why she herself and the Girl Up! community decided to hold this informational seminar and she answered in the most honest way.

She stated, “As social justice warriors, it was important to us to have our voices represented, in many different forms. I know in the minority realm of things, feminism is such a represented minority, in a way, that we always hear their sides of their voices, ways, and grievances.”

She also stated, “since I am Native American, I never hear stories the Native American culture speak of on their grievances, therefore I knew there were other voices being ignored. So as a whole collective, we wanted students on our campus to come together and have an outlet to speak on many different topics.”

Without any spoilers, some of the topics that are going to be discussed include the empowering feminist community, LGBT community, the topic on the #MeToo movement, racial inequality, and aspects of Planned Parenthood funding.

This event is free; doors open at 5 p.m. and close at 5:30. The event ends at 7 p.m. Come watch what Girl Up! has put together, doing their best on speaking out on many unspoken social topics and don’t miss out on a chance to be educated.
