2018 Winter Olympics Come to an End
February 27, 2018
The end of the PyeongChang Olympics came with a breathtaking closing ceremony on February 25, 2018. The audience was able to see the North and South Korean athletes marching together.
Before the Olympic games, there was very coarse tension between North and South Korea. As they competed under a united flag, the relationship between the two countries has eased. The main theme within these games was that peace is possible and will continue in years to come.
There were 35,000 spectators that had many notable people such as Ivanka Trump, Donald Trump’s daughter, watching the closing ceremony. South Korean President Moon Jae-in and his wife Kim Jung-sook stood next to Ivanka.
Maddie Matney, a sports enthusiast says, “I think it’s great that an individual who is very involved with the federal government was able to make it to the closing ceremony.”
During the games, the hip-hop group group with nine members, EXO, who is known for their awesome beats performed at the closing ceremony. People watching from the arena and on their televisions thought the group seemed to have similar attire to the Colonel. Yes, that is correct. KFC’s all time famous Colonel with the best fried chicken.
This observation by viewers spread insanely quick on Twitter and caught many people’s attention.
Miss. Matney also states, “I had seen this on Twitter myself and thought it was quite hilarious that a band wouldn’t think over what they would wear way before the performance in front of millions of people.”
The ceremony began with the South Korean guitarist Yang Tae-Hwan who performed “Winter”. This was followed by a post rock band, Jambinai, from South Korea performing “Time of Extinction”.
After the opening, the parade of nations began where 92 National Olympics Committees came into the Olympic Stadium. As the Greek flag was being raised, the anthem played along and then the Olympic flag was lowered and given to Shim Jae-kook then to Thomas Back and finally to the major of Beijing, Chen Jining. The flag will next be raised in Tokyo, Japan for the 2020 Summer Olympics on July 24.
As it was a great game, IOC President Thomas Bach closed the games and called it “The Games of New Horizons.”
