On February 15th, the White House released a statement saying that President Trump signed a law. The law makes it easier for people with mental illnesses to own a gun. “Mr Trump last year repealed an Obama-era rule allowing the names of certain people on mental health benefits to be entered into a criminal database.” That was the only quote that the White House had to say after the picture was released.

The photo was released the same day of the school shooting in Florida. In a tweet, Trump stated that there were “so many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed,” and that he was even expelled for bad and erratic behaviors. The controversy with him signing this law is that he called the shooter mentally ill but then signed a gun law that would make it easier for people with mental illnesses to purchase firearms.

CBS News requested a copy of the image of Trump signing the law, but the White House denied the request, even though White House photagraphers confirmed there are pictures of him signing it. Trump also stated that he won’t be commenting on the topic of gun control, but due to the shooting in Florida people are expecting a statement.
