The Netflix original series “The End of the F****ing World” has a dark humor that resonates with many binge watching teens around the world. Based on the graphic novel by Charles Forman, the twisted personalities of the two main characters, Alyssa (Jessica Barden) and James (Alex Lawther), have somehow related to the madness every teenager feels inside.
In the opening scene of the show, James introduces himself by saying, “I’m James. I’m 17. And I’m pretty sure I’m a psychopath.” Having killed multiple animals from a young age, “just to feel something,” he is now ready to kill something bigger: a human. This is where Alyssa comes in. James has to know from the start that she is the one he will kill and he just has to find the perfect time and place to do it.
Alyssa is clearly the opposite of James. She describes how “sometimes, everything feels, sort of, too much.” She has no control over her emotions or her mouth and lashes out on everyone she comes across. Struggling with growing up without her father and dealing with her mother’s new husband, who’s constantly telling her how much better their life would be without her, Alyssa somehow finds security in James darkness.
Alyssa conveniences James to steal his dads car and run away with her, which James finds as the perfect opportunity to get Alyssa alone and murder her. But, their journey takes many unexpected turns leading James to feel emotions he hasn’t felt since his mother’s suicide and he finds out what he has been missing in Alyssa’s craziness.
Both James and Alyssa find love in the madness around them and inside them.
ERHS senior Vanessa Perez is a huge fan of the Netflix show. When asked, “What about the show was the most memorable?”
her response was, “When James found out he actually wanted to be with someone.” This was her favorite moment because,” He discovered that even humanity deserves a second chance.”
