Why some math classes are irrelevant

We are exposed to math at a very early age and it hurt and helped us in many ways in certain situations.

After middle school though, math in high school becomes very challenging to students who can not simply keep up with the kids who can. We have courses such as Int. 1, Int. 2, & Int. 3 and these three courses are considered Common Core; unfortunately these classes are hard for teachers to essentially teach. It’s hard for them to break down the courses to student in the class for them to better grasp the concepts.

According to most school’s A-G requirements, you need four years of math. Math should be offered and required for students up to a certain extent, perhaps up to your sophomore year.

The purpose of high school is to teach and educate kids at a higher level then what they went through in middle school, and to prepare you for college. Since high school is to prepare you for college, students should be able to pick what math classes they want to take. This new Common Core course that they have going on is a little bit too difficult for most students. Last year the percentage of kids who failed Integrated 3 was over 52%. We need to give students RELEVANT classes like Financial Algebra and Statistics. Unless you know you want to go into a field where you know it’s going to require all that math, then feel free.

“ School needs to start gearing more to what the kids want a little and not what they think is good for them,” says senor Kierin Daughtery at Eleanor Roosevelt High in Eastvale,CA.

Another student from there says, “ Common core is not a bad thing because the level of math we learn now is what we are going to be taught in college so why not learn it now,” says Demian Villasenor. He has a good point and it made me realize that college is going to teach us the hard math we don’t need, but we got to do what we have to do.
