The Causes for the current Natural Disaster!

In August of 2017 Hurricane Harvey occurred in Huston, Texas creating a death toll of at least 60 people. It was one of the largest hurricanes to occur here in the United States since Welma of 2005. But the natural disaster did not stop there.

In September of 2017 Hurricane Irma hit the southwest of Florida, Hurricane Jose hit the northern US, North Carolina, an 8.1 earthquake hit the west coast of southern Mexico. That earthquake then created an 8.4 level tsunami off the coast of Chile. All in one month and the month is still not finished. And people still want to argue that climate change is not real.

Mrs. Niemeyer, AP Biology teacher here at Eleanor Roosevelt, mentioned that this years natural disasters are “more extreme than past years due to an increasing in global temperature.” In the 1960’s and 1970’s there was a diverse scientific social and political movement which addressed the worlds enviormental issures; the environmental movement which is also known as the ecology movement.

6 November 2012, our president tweeted, “the concept of global warming was created by the Chinese in order to make US manufacturing non-competitive.” Now this was tweeted five years ago and his opinion on climate change could have changed but considering that during the presidential debate he did state he did not believe in climate change proves us otherwise.

The current events did become one of the waking calls for American citizens in realizing that climate change is indeed an actual thing happening in our world and if we do not do anything to help it from getting worse, then our children and grandchildren will have to face the consequences of our faults.

I asked Mrs.Neimeyer how we can madigate climate change and global warming and she said,”increase our efficiency, reduced our use of carbon emitting products, change our diet, and lower our emotions,” those are some of the things us, America, can do but as a teenager here at ERHS can also, “definitely  change our diet, ” to a more, “plant based diet,” because, “deforestation has a larger impact on climate change and the deforestation is directly tied to our food choices.” We are not helpless. Even as just teenagers, changing something small in our everyday life like our diet can a bigger impact on climate change then we think.

“Deffinetly due to an increase in temperature we can expect more severe rain events.” So why not start meditating? Let’s leave our marks on the world and create a better tomorrow for the next generation. Together we can make a difference.
