Halloween season is here, and Halloween is in about two weeks. During each festive season, there are movies corresponding to the season, such as “Home Alone” for Christmas. There are also many different Halloween movies made for the October season, causing debates about which one is the scariest. They are usually horror movies that surprise the audience.
There are many candidates like “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “Monster House,” “Halloween, “Caroline,” and many more. Students of Eleanor Roosevelt High School shared their opinion on this topic of which horror movie is the scariest, especially during Halloween.

“I think the first ‘Saw’ movie is the scariest, mostly because it is kind of grotesque,” says Ian Cho, a senior at ERHS, who is scared of horror movies, but still likes to watch them frequently.
However, Jennifer Le, who is also a senior, thinks that gore can’t be the sole aspect of fear. She likes to watch horror movies just like Ian and looks at more varied aspects of the movie. She says that the atmosphere and tone of the movie are more important than the intense visual horror, such as gore.
“I think ‘Insidious’ or ‘The Nun’ is the scariest, atmospheric-wise,” said Jennifer. “I agree with Ian that ‘Saw’ is pretty scary but I think that one’s more of a disgust rather than fear because it doesn’t really have effects about the atmosphere of the scene.”
Some students believe that the gore aspect of horror movies is what makes fear and horror within the movie, while others think that the tone of the movie decides how ominous and scary the movie is going to be.
