“Reading Rainbow,” a popular kids’ TV series, raised many students in classrooms when they were younger. Although Reading Rainbow aired many years ago, in 1983, people from all over the world cherish the show as a nostalgic, vivid memory that accompanied them through their childhood.

“Reading Rainbow” was first introduced as an educational and storytelling TV show with fun features like “Between the Lions.” A puppet lion family would tell stories and share facts, bettering students’ reading and writing skills in a fun way. Reading Rainbow was very good at captivating its younger audience’s attention, and that’s all thanks to the star of the show, LeVar Burton. LeVar Burton is the face of nostalgia for many, and in “Reading Rainbow,” he narrates through books and even travels to new places to teach students about them. It was an effective way to expose students to the different diversities and cultures of the outside world.
” ‘Reading Rainbow’ was definitely a core memory for me. I still remember sitting down on the carpet in elementary school and watching it on the projector with my friends,” said Scarlett Rodriguez, who enjoyed the series as a kid.
On November 10, 2006, “Reading Rainbow” aired its last episode, and it was said to have stopped production. It’s a common misconception that “Reading Rainbow” stopped due to production faults or financial issues; however, it really stopped due to a shift in political and educational priorities.
As complications sorted themselves out, “Reading Rainbow” officially renounced its production, and the show is going to air again on October 4, 2025. It will have newly featured books, celebrity narrators, and new craft and science projects, aiming to inspire a new generation of young readers.
“I saw it on my TikTok feed one day that they were going to air again and I had this huge wave of memories coming back to me,” says Leo Alvarez, recalling the show’s nostalgia.
