Week one of the NFL was full of ups and downs, from the Bills making an unexpected fourth-quarter comeback against the Ravens to the Chiefs’ star Xavier Worthy, who went down with a shoulder injury from a collision with Travis Kelce.
Week one started on Thursday night with the Cowboys and the Eagles facing off in Philadelphia. Just seconds into the game, Jalen Carter of the Eagles spat on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, receiving a suspension, which forced him to sit out the whole game. It was not certain if Jalen Carter was going to receive a longer suspension than sitting out Week 1, but it has been settled that he has served his suspension and was fined $57,222. Even with the loss of Jalen Carter and with Ben VanSumeren going down in the game, later on to be announced as out for the season, the Eagles came out victorious, winning 24-20.
The International game in Brazil featured the Chiefs and the Chargers. On the opening drive, Xavier Worthy collided with Travis Kelce, injuring his shoulder. This loss of Worthy is detrimental to the Chiefs’ offense, in addition to having Rashee Rice out for five more games on a suspension. Justin Herber had himself a game, getting the win and having 300 yards and 3 touchdowns. It was the Chargers’ first win against the Chiefs since week 3 of the 2021 season.
Roosevelt Freshman Mateo Truijo shared his thoughts about the Chiefs’ loss in game one.
“It sucked to lose, but when the Chiefs lost to the Lions week one [in 2023], we ended up winning it all,” Truijo said.
In Sunday morning’s game between the Patriots and the Raiders, it was Heisman runner-up Ashton Jeanty’s debut. In Jeanty’s debut, he had 19 carries, 38 rushing yards, and one touchdown.
Roosevelt Senior Aiden Lupian made a prediction based on Jeanty’s debut.
“I thought Ashton Jeantys looked outstanding and that he will be the future of the Raiders for years to come,” Lupian said.
Will Campbell, the fourth overall draft pick, an Offensive lineman from LSU, also had his rookie debut. Campbell was good through the first half, but struggled after halftime, having two false starts and allowing two sacks. The Patriots lost the game 13-20.
Sunday Night, the Bills hosted the Ravens and had a showdown. The Bills went up early, having 7-3 going into the second quarter, but after that it was the Ravens’ show with Lamar Jackson going 14/19 with 209 yards and two touchdowns. Derick Henry also had a monster game himself, having 18 carries with 169 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
With 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter, it looked like the Ravens had solidified their win with the score being 40-25, but with the Bills scoring with 3 minutes left, making the game 40-32, the game was getting close. The Ravens, with 3 minutes, got the ball back, and on a run with Derick Henry, he fumbled the ball. The Bills scored on that drive and made it 40-38. The Ravens got the ball but decided to punt on 4th & 2. The Bills came out with the win, kicking a field goal with one second left on the clock. Josh Allen ended the game with 394 yards and two touchdowns.
