This year, a good friend of mine and Roosevelt alumnus, Landen Breckner, proposed the idea of bringing the international program/club FCA to ERHS. Abbreviated for Fellowship of Christian Athletes, FCA has the clear goal of guiding athletes and coaches into stronger relationships with Christ. I was so excited to help establish an FCA club here at our school, and now as our flagship year comes to a close, I can confidently say that it has helped me and my athlete friends grow stronger in the word while also supplying us with helpful wisdom about how to live our lives and compete in our sports in a Christ-like way.
The club meetings take place every Friday during first lunch in room D103, and we always start with a chill, fun game to get everyone’s spirits up. We then transition into a brief Bible study, which is led by Landen and designed with athletes in mind.
The studies don’t feel all serious and uptight, but instead feel laid back and chill, with the ability to get a bit serious if they need to. The studies are always super interactive as well, and it’s during the breakout questions that we are able to hear the opinions and testimonies of other student athletes, as well as share our views and testimonies with them. In doing this, we are able to grow and foster a community in Christ, which is essential for a healthy Christian lifestyle.
The fact that we are able to connect in a Godly way with other people who know and understand the challenges, demands, and manic highs and lows of being a student athlete in high school. Our club, although small, I feel, has such a healthy and Christ-centered community that I am honored to be a part of.
“The most impactful part of FCA is building a community for students and athletes to know Jesus more and to help athletes grow in their sports,” said club leader Landen Breckner. “What I have enjoyed most from leading is seeing new students show up and wanting to be involved in FCA, and getting to share devotionals with students that impact their lives.”
“I feel that FCA has impacted me most this semester by bringing a community together that really keeps me and each other accountable,” said ERHS varsity XC and track athlete Adrian Lopez. “It’s also a nice little way to find peace throughout a rough school day, especially when you have a lot going on. It’s really fun too, and we try and make everyone feel welcomed. But I believe mostly it helped me maintain that balance and keep God priority throughout the loud noises of life.”

Our club still has plenty of room to grow, and I believe having a community of Christian athletes like the one found in FCA can help you grow closer to Christ and become more like him in your athletic and academic career. Join us during 1st lunch Fridays, it’s a time you don’t want to miss!
