The University of Colorado star quarterback and the son Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders was overlooked on the first two days of the NFL draft before the Cleveland Browns traded up to select him in the fifth round, 144th overall, on Sunday.
Shedeur was one of the most significant college players in recent college history and for 4 years, his father and his teammate Travis Hunter were part of the greatest stories in college football. However, there was a turn in events. Thursday’s draft would have been the handoff as Shedeur went to the NFL, hopefully as the first five players chosen. Shedeur Sanders was not only not drafted in the top five, but he was also not selected on the first day of the draft. He was not only not drafted on Day 1, but he was also not drafted on Day 2.
Two different quarterbacks Jalen Milroe selected by the Seattle Seahawks, and Dillon Gabriel who was also selected by the Clevelands were drafted ahead of him. “I would say I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity throughout everything. I don’t ever focus on the negative or even think about the negative because the positive happened so fast and it’s a change of emotions. For me, it was just playing quarterback. That’s what it’s about. You can’t be up, too low or anything. You got to be able to celebrate. And when we score a touchdown, we celebrate for a little bit. Now, it’s back to, time to work, it’s time to go,” Sanders stated at a conference call with local reporters from ESPN.
I interviewed a freshman at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, named Brayden Monsale and he stated, “It was surprising that he wasn’t drafted in the first round.”
I also interviewed another freshman at ERHS, Danielle Catudio and she stated, “They probably didn’t draft him in the first round because there were many red flags.”
