The Crane Wives have been around since 2015. The band hasn’t released any albums since 2017, up until this past August in 2024! They began going on tour for this album, which was a huge hit. This band is very well known, especially with people who play Dungeons and Dragons, attend Renaissance fairs, like writing, and so much more! They typically write in indie folk rock.
The Band consists of four members: Emilee Petersmark, Kate Pillsbury, Dan Rickabus, and Ben Zito. The four of them worked together at a Chinese restaurant and decided to perform on weekends to get out of that workspace. Obviously, this worked out very well for these four. Ever since they began to grow, they have performed over 600 shows all over the world.

We reached out to a senior at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, Reese Sypowicz, to get her opinion on the band. Sypowicz states, “I’ve listened to The Crane Wives since my junior Year, and it really helped me get through that stressful year. Their music has always had a deeper meaning to me, but they convey it in a way that leaves room for further analysis on future listens.”
Sypowicz pointed out a very notable thing about The Crane Wives, how their music always has some meaning that you can analyze even if it was released years later. The way they write their music has a deep meaning to it, and Sypowicz mentioned that Tounges and Teeth have a good way of showing that.
My personal favorite song from this band is “How To Rest,” because it has a huge meaning behind it that’s shown to the audience so easily. This song is strictly about learning to love again after going through something hard. I listen to The Crane Wives a lot while writing because it helps give me inspiration, but overall their music is amazing.
We asked a first-year student at Cal Poly Pomona, Max Quan, his opinion on The Crane Wives. He explains, “I think the new album is really good. They’re good at preserving their original sound in a new way. Their folklore style of music helps them convey the meanings of their songs in a way that’s like telling a story. I’ve been listening since around 2019, and my favorite song overall is ‘Icarus!'”
Quan pointed out some of the differences between the newest album and the older albums, and the biggest thing is how their music still sounds new, but it still sounds like them. It’s a big thing to keep music still feeling the same way as it did before, despite it being newer.
Overall, The Crane Wives have amazing music. The songs that they write have deep meanings behind them while still sounding amazing. There are a lot of metaphors used and these songs are overall very creative and meaningful.
