The New York Jets have officially released quarterback Aaron Rodgers, marking the end of his two-year tenure with the team and making him a free agent for the first time in his 20-year NFL career. This decision allows Rodgers, 41, to explore opportunities with other teams or contemplate retirement.
Rodgers joined the Jets in April 2023 after an 18-season career with the Green Bay Packers where he secured a Super Bowl victory in 2011 and earned MVP awards. His time with the Jets, however, was marred by challenges. In his debut game, Rodgers suffered a season-ending chilies injury just four snaps in. He returned for the 2024 season, starting 17 games but the team struggled to a 5-12 record. Rodgers’s performance declined with career lows in several statistical categories, including a total QBR of 48.2, 6.7 yards per attempt, and 5.8 yards per dropback.
The Jet’s decision to realize Rodgers was influenced by these performance issues and a desire to move in a different direction at the quarterback position. They have since agreed to terms with former Steelers and Bears quarterback Justin Feilds on a two-year, $40 million deal signaling a new chapter for the franchise.
As a free agent, Rodgers has garnered interest from several teams. The Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants, and Minnesota Vikings are reportedly exploring adding the veteran quarterback to their rosters. the Steelers, in particular, have an increased need at quarterback following Justin Field’s departure to the Jets.
The Giants have also been active in the quarterback market hosting visits with other veteran quarterbacks as they seek to solidify their offense. Rodgers’s future in the NFL remains uncertain. While he has expressed to desire to continue playing, he also acknowledged the possibility of retirement. As one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in NFL history.
A freshman at Eleanor Roosevelt High School named Cyyd Adriano said, “Aaron Rodgers is a great athlete and an amazing quarterback.”
Khloe Brown, another ERHS freshman said, “I don’t care for football much and I have no clue who Aaron Rodgers is.”
