Music and fashion have almost always gone hand and hand. Which makes sense since both music and fashion are used for people to express themselves. A lot of time people’s fashion sense correlates to the music they listen to, and you can get a sense of what type of music someone listens to based on their style. Almost like the music scene comes with an unspoken dress code. Like how the leather jacket appears like a staple of the punk rock look, or the over-sized baggy look commonly seen in hip-hop scenes.
One very well known impact music had on fashion is the Jazz age in the roaring 20’s. During this time Jazz music correlated with the flapper girl fashion. But both Jazz music and flapper fashion had much deeper meaning than what you may see on the surface. Flappers and Jazz broke society standards and became much more than just music and fashion and was more of a whole lifestyle for others. Flappers and Jazz can also be tied politically, with advocating for further freedom for women.
Another style and music genre with political ties is Punk, punk represents individuality, anti-authoritarianism, and anti-establishment views. Punk music came to the scene as a way of pushing music and societal standards. Punk fashion is known to go against mainstream society and beauty standards. With bright unnatural colors in their hair styled in unique ways and body piercings. The clothing represented in punk fashion is often DIY hand made pieces like patch work, studs and spikes, and ripped up clothing pieces.

When you really look into it music and fashion create a community and culture for those with similar views and other things in common.Using it for self expression and allowing people to feel like they have a place, Especially for those who may feel out of place with their non-mainstream views.
Ava Carter loves both music and fashion to express herself, “Honestly the type of music i’m into shapes and influences my clothing choice and style way more than any fashion trend does.” Carter states.
Anthony Santos also shares his opinion the connection between music and fashion, “Once i got into more alternative music I definitely started dressing more alternative, i think its because i felt connected to the music and artists through the music and that just involved to my fashion being connected too.”Santos shares.
People also tend to idolize their favorite music artists and inspiration for their style through the artists style. And some artists may use this style to send a message that is beyond just the fabric. Like with artists like Billie Eilish who used her style to challenge mainstream beauty standards by wearing oversize baggy street wear.
Ultimately, music and fashion are both forms of expression reflecting different beliefs and personalities. Whether its the flappers from the roaring 20’s of the punk movement of the 70’s each genre and movement tell a different story. For as long as people use sound and style to express themselves the two will be intertwined
