On February 11-14, Eleanor Roosevelt High School’s library hosted a Valentine’s card making activity called “Make a Valentine”. Many students were able to enjoy this fun and festive activity during both lunches. During this activity you could use several different supplies such as paint, stamps, ink pads, markers, and a paint splatter device to decorate paper heart cards. All materials are provided.
Nadine Loza, the librarian at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, hopes students see the library as somewhere to hang out and enjoy a fun activity. Mrs. Loza states
“In the library, we like to have something called a makerspace. It’s an opportunity for people to come in and make something. We do it around once a month, usually around a holiday and my library student aids help me come up with the ideas. That’s why we decided this month to do Valentines.”

Mrs. Loza hopes that what student’s take away from this experience is that they see the library as something more than just a place to check out books. She later states
“It’s a place where they could gather or they could make something or they could just read a book. It’s not always just gonna be one hundred percent quiet in here because the library is an active place but of course, I still have rules.”
Many students partook in this activity. Naomi Jhu, a student at Eleanor Roosevelt High School states
“I really enjoyed participating in the library Valentine’s event because there were lots of different materials to use and the stamps were really cute. I was able to make a card and the person I gave it to really liked it.”
Next month’s makerspace is called “Read Across America”. The library hopes to encourage everyone in the school community to think about and read their favorite books and another craft will also be included in the library.
