Disney’s Animal Kingdom is an adored theme park in the heart of Walt Disney World in Florida. This part of the park has lush landscapes, immersive animal exhibits, and a distinct dedication to conservation efforts.
This year, the park welcomed a new addition to its animal kingdom: Cub Bakso, who has already captured the hearts of many.
Who is Cub Bakso?
Cub Bakso is a Malayan tiger, a species native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia. Unfortunately, this subspecies of tiger is extremely endangered, with less than 200 of these tigers believed to be left in the wild.

These tigers have experienced habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict that have contributed to their sharp decline in population, making conservation efforts more crucial than ever.
Bakso was born at a breeding facility that has partnered with Disney’s Animal Kingdom and was delicately transported to the park in a controlled, stress-free environment. This young cub was named after a popular dish in his native region of Southeast Asia which symbolizes his connection to the culture and environment where his species originates.
Sofia Billups, a senior at ERHS mentions, “[She] didn’t know that they had a new addition but I think he’s very cute.”
The Role of Bakso in Conservation
Bakso’s debut is an event celebrated by visitors, however his arrival has a deeper purpose. Disney’s Animal Kingdom has been dedicated to not just showcasing the beauty of the animal kingdom, but also providing vital support globally in conservation efforts.
The park has become a home to a variety of endangered species, many of which are part of the managed breeding programs that aim to preserve their numbers in the wild.

Another senior at ERHS, Rachel Cong mentions, “I have not heard about Bakso the tiger until just now…knowing that tigers are endangered species, seeing a baby is refreshing.”
By introducing Bakso to the park, Disney hopes to raise awareness of the Malayan tiger’s plight and inspire visitors to participate in the conservation. The park offers educational programs, behind-the-scenes tours, and other initiatives that help emphasize the importance of protecting wildlife and their natural habitats.
