Tom Brady's Jersey- Stolen and Recovered

Rich Wang, Staff Writer

During Super Bowl LI, Tom Brady’s jersey was stolen. Due to the theft being a first-degree felony, the FBI carried out an investigation and found the stolen jersey in Mexico in the possession of Martin Mauricio Ortega Camberos, the editor of La Prensa, a medium-size daily in Mexico City. Camberos formally resigned from his job March 14, according to OEM, the mother company of La Prensa.

The missing jersey was brought to attention during the post-game celebration for the Patriots’ victory when Brady was heard saying that his jersey was missing. Despite his visible irritation, the next day, he said, “Those are special ones to keep, you know, but what can you do? I’ll take the ring, and that’s good enough for me.” Now, it looks like he’ll get to have the jersey along with the ring. That’s pretty fortunate, because Houston police reports estimate the jersey to be worth $500,000, and who knows what would have happened if it ended up on eBay.

The investigation to find Brady’s jersey consisted of the F.B.I. and the police in Houston, where the game was played, as well as Mexican authorities and the league. During the investigation, it was found that Camberos had a media credential for the event, along with other game-day clothing and equipment which, excluding the stolen Super Bowl LI jersey, were Brady’s Super Bowl XLIX jersey and what is believed to be Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller’s Super Bowl 50 helmet. All three items were returned to the United States, and are being authenticated by the FBI in Boston. They may be used as evidence against Camberos if he is charged in the case.

“I am happy my jerseys from SB 49 and SB 51 have been recovered, and I want to thank all of the law enforcement agencies involved. I know they worked hard on this case — and it is very much appreciated. Hopefully when I get the jerseys back I can make something very positive come from this experience.” -Tom Brady
