When “Squid Game” dropped on Netflix in September 2021, it became an instant global sensation. The adrenaline-inducing survival drama, blending in social commentary with high-stakes children’s games, captivated audiences worldwide and quickly became one of Netflix’s most-watched shows.
With the first season of “Squid Game” ending in a cliffhanger, it left many fans eagerly waiting for the new chapter to see Seong Gi-Hun’s personal growth and his ongoing feud with the notorious organization that led him to who he is now.
Many fans have theorized about the games Seong Gi-Hun would face when he eventually goes back in hopes of saving more players from the Front Man and his entourage of Pink Guards.
The new season also promised new exciting characters that would make each game more interesting.
Rachel Cong, a senior at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, says, “I was really surprised when they casted Jo Yuri and Choi Seung-Hyun to play characters within the show. My favorite thing is when they’re all helping each other out.”
When season 2 was first released, fans were looking forward to the new character dynamics as well as the continued exploration into the darker themes of power, corruption, and survival.
This is a common topic among fans, especially with Seong Gi-Hun’s plan of revenge, using the money he had won in the first season to fund his ongoing investigation.
“I love Squid Game when it first came out 3 years ago, I really love the Pink Guards. I found the circle ones really cute,” said Haley Zelaya, a senior at Eleanor Roosevelt High School.
After the debut of “Squid Game“ season 2, fans have heard repeatedly that there wouldn’t be another long three-year gap for season 3 as it did between season 1 and season 2.
True to the rumors, season 3 now has an official release date and is coming soon. It boasts as one of the shortest turnaround we’ve ever seen on Netflix.
Netflix has confirmed that “Squid Game” season 3 will premiere on June 27, 2025. This release is almost exactly six months after season 2 dropped on December 26, 2024.
This new season will also mark the end of the series which has the opportunity to run for Emmy nominations for two consecutive years, thanks to the close proximity between seasons 2 and 3.
The creator of “Squid Game”, Hwang Dong-Hyuk, previously hinted that the wait wouldn’t be long, noting that the way season 2 and season 3 were scripted and filmed made it possible to deliver them quickly.
In an interview with Deadline, he explained, “When I was writing the script for the two seasons, I felt like there was a big turning point or an inflection point, and that was the end of episode seven. So I thought it would do justice to have a separate season after that. That’s why I had the first seven episodes as Season 2 and then the rest as Season 3.”
With the release of season 3 coming soon, fans are excited and anticipating what could happen next in the continuation of this series.
