As the new school year approaches and students are thinking about next year’s schedule, it’s the perfect to time practice good habits for a successful school year.
To begin next school year make sure to fill out and submit your course selections, however, the classes you pick are not guaranteed. Counselors will meet with students at later dates. For current Freshmen counselors will meet between March 13- March 21. Students currently in Sophmore year will meet between March 6 -March 12 and current Juniors will meet between February 20- February 28.
Having good time management skills can really help you throughout the school year. Good time management skills can help you with turning in assignments on time, not feeling as stressed out about upcoming due dates, and overall can improve your grade. A couple ofways to help build this habit is writing important dates or due dates on a planner or calendar. Another great way to improve your time management is to prioritize important tasks. You can do this by determining which task requires more time, is due first, and which is worth more of your grade. For example, if you have a big project due worth a lot of your grade, you could prioritize that and work on easier homework later.
Make sure to stay engaged during class. It’s easy to fall behind and that could ultimately affect your grade and understanding of the subject. Try to stay ahead because once you are behind, it can be difficult to catch up. Participating in class is a great way to stay engaged. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you’re confused or need clarification.
Be involved! Not only do extracurricular activities look great on college applications, but they are also enjoyable. Sports teams and clubs are often looking for new members to join. Sports are a great way to keep active and joining new clubs or programs can help you discover new hobbies you really enjoy. Eleanor Roosevelt High School offers several different clubs, sports teams, and programs.
Finally, choose classes that interest you. Trying new electives are great way to branch out and find new hobbies you enjoy. By choosing classes you can learn skills that can be useful even after high school.
Some students at Roosevelt shared their own advice for the next school year.
A student at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, Naomi Jhu said.
“I suggest that incoming ninth graders should take AP human geography because it’s not too difficult and you get to go on a really fun field trip to Chinatown and Little Tokyo, which I enjoyed a lot.”
Another student at ERHS, Aliyah Cerna, suggested.
“Be open-minded to opportunities like clubs and be open-minded to meeting new people.”
