Her posts described how a routine train ride turned into a nightmarish journey to a place that didn’t exist.

Hasumi’s story begins with her train passing her usual stop and continuing into an unfamiliar, rural area. Eventually, the train stopped at a deserted station called Kisaragi, which doesn’t appear on any maps. She described stepping off into a quiet, unsettling place with no people or signs of life. As she tried to find help, she encountered strange noises and a mysterious old man who warned her to leave quickly. Her final posts described someone or something approaching before she disappeared, leaving her online audience in suspense.

While Kisaragi Station is fictional, it has parallels in real life. The phenomenon of “phantom stations” has been documented in Japan, where abandoned rail stops from defunct train lines still exist. A “Japan Times” article in 2020 explored the eerie appeal of these forgotten places. Similarly, ghostly train stories appear in Japanese media, such as in the famous anime “Spirited Away”, which features an otherworldly train journey into mysterious realms.

To get a sense of how this legend resonates with young people, I spoke with two Eleanor Roosevelt High School juniors. Annie Liang shared, “The story of Kisaragi Station is creepy because it makes you wonder if you could accidentally slip into a place you can’t come back from.”

Yi Zhang added, “It’s especially scary that she was posting online the whole time, but no one could help her. It makes the story feel real.”

Online, forums like Reddit’s r/UnresolvedMysteries often discuss the story. One user suggested the legend reflects fears about being lost in Japan’s declining rural areas, while another argued it might just be a well-crafted internet hoax designed to entertain and spook readers.

The legend of Kisaragi Station continues to fascinate people because it blends modern fears with timeless mystery. Whether it’s an urban myth, a cautionary tale, or simply a piece of creative storytelling, it reminds us how little we truly know about the world’s hidden corners.
