Part one of the Wicked movie is based on the World of Oz. The movie was directed by Jon M. Chu. It tells the story of the Wizard of Oz. Starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as Glinda and Elphaba, along with Jonathan Bailey who plays Fieyro.
The film came to theaters on November 22, and was already announced as the third biggest box opening of the year.
A lot of people’s favorite songs in the musical were “Popular” and “Defying Gravity.” The songs showed Elphaba choosing her path over what the world wanted for her.
But the songs overall had an energetic beat to it.
The film starts with the ending of The Wizard of Oz. The Wicked Witch of the West died and people started singing the song, “No One Mourns the Wicked.”
Glinda also known as Ariana Grande starts asking the question, “Are people born wicked, or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?” Then the movie flashed back to the backstory and childhood of Elphaba.
The story starts with information about her mom having an affair with a lover, who makes her drink a green elixir, which could be why Elphaba has green skin.
Then, the story takes place in a university, where Elphaba meets her new roommate and potential friend, Glinda.
She wasn’t originally supposed to be attending the University, instead was there to support her sister, but after some convincing from a teacher, Madame Morrible, played by Michelle Yeoh, her dad told her she should attend.
Later in the movie Madame Morrible takes interest in Elphaba’s abilities. She decided to give Elphaba lessons but ended up making Glinda jealous.
Fiyero Tigelaar is introduced later in the movie and seems to have chemistry with Elphaba when he runs into her after riding his horse to school. At the end of the movie, it leaves off on a cliffhanger when Elphaba embraces herself as a rebel.
Part Two is set to release in November of 2025.
