The Disney movie “Coco” is a very beautiful animated movie that represents the meaning of Dia De Los Muertos. The movie goes into details of the Hispanic belief that loved ones who’ve passed away come back to visit on the Day of The Dead.
“Coco” is an animated movie that is good for all ages. The movie can be found on many different streaming services such as Disney+, Hulu, Apple TV, and more.
The animated movie is about a boy named Miguel who goes on a very long journey in the afterlife. He meets some of his deceased family members including Mama Imelda, Papa Julio, Tia Rosita, and others in his family. Miguel is a young boy who loves music but his family hates music and all musicians. He believes that he is related to a famous musician, and that belief gets him into trouble and causes him to end up in the afterlife. Miguel must go through many challenges and meet many new people to get back to his normal life.
“Coco” has some very good themes to it. The movie represents how important family is. Miguel heavily relied on his family throughout the entire movie. Another theme could be to never give up on our dreams. Miguel held on to his dream of becoming a musician all throughout the movie and it is what kept him going and motivated him to get out of the afterlife.
The characters in the story definitely capture the hearts of viewers. Laila Telles, a freshman in the district stated, “My favorite character would either be Dante or Miguel because Dante is just so silly and Miguel too because he is just a cool character.” Alex Zhou, an 8th grader in the district also had some favorite characters in this story. He stated, “My favorite character is Hector because from him, I can see that he is a person who wants to chase for his dreams.”
This movie is definitely a perfect movie to watch with family and friends and learn more about the Hispanic traditions and beliefs of Dia De Los Muertos.
