After the Los Angeles Dodgers won the world series, fans celebrated in a peculiar way. After the game fans filled the streets to celebrate, although their actions don’t really reflect excitement. Fans expressed excitement for their teams win through looting, violence, throwing fireworks at officers, and even setting fire to a bus.
Many reports showing stores in the surrounding areas being looted. One store affected by this is the Nike store. There have been many videos circling around on various social media outlets featuring people walking out of stores holding merchandise. Police reports show 6 people taken into custody for suspicion of commercial burglary.
Police made attempts to stop the crowds. Along with the 6 arrests for burglary, LAPD proceeded to arrest 2 for failure to disperse, and four more for stolen property. There were also multiple reports of injury from that night. Even a food vendor operator was injured due to being caught between the police and rioters. One officer was taken to the hospital, while others faced minor injuries.
Dodger fan Dilpreet Kaur stated “It’s almost embarrassing to call myself a Dodger fan when other fans behave like that.”
Another fan Leeanna Jenkins shared her thoughts on the situation “I honestly don’t understand why anyone would think that’s an appropriate way to celebrate, and it gives fans a bad reputation.”
There were also many reports of vandalism, including setting a town bus on fire. A crowd of people knocked over a metro bus near Sunset and Echo Park Avenue before setting it on fire. The bus was occupied by the bus operator and five passengers, who managed to get off before it was set to flames. None were arrested during this incident.
Setting off fireworks seems like a reasonable way for celebration but only when done properly. However during the riot celebration setting fireworks led to multiple injuries. In one incident the fire work went off while in someones hand, leading to the loss of two fingers. Along with this fireworks were thrown at officers in the area.
This incident follows a lot of the same trends that occurred during the 2020 world series Dodger win. Where multiple people and officers were injured and many arrests were made. If you are planning to celebrate your favorite teams, it’s highly urged that you take safety precautions and lean towards non-destructive ways to celebrate.
